Hello there — It’s been a while. It is May and I think I’ve finally recovered from the holidays. I’ve had a few songs in the works, but haven’t been able to finish them. But this one, it just flew out of me. I couldn’t control it. It is always a welcome surprise for me when that happens. Sometimes you can wrestle with a song for what seems like forever, and sometimes they just happen.
I’m pretty excited about this one friends. I even had a very special guest join me on the recording—the illustrious Kenny Rogers. Yep, that’s right… I needed some tambourine on the bridge, so I called up my friend Big K (that’s what I call him) and he flew out on his private jet from Nashville. Okay, okay, so Kenny Rogers didn’t really play on it. But it was his tambourine, I swear! Well, not his tambourine so much, but he did sign it… I think. See that little squiggle in the picture? That’s his John Hancock alright. You can tell, right?
Have a listen:
I’m a pretty positive guy. I can usually see the bright side in things, so this may seem pretty negative or passive-agressive, and that might be true—but it is honest. This song was, in many ways, venting out a frustrating and painful experience. Now that it’s passed into song, the greater meaning for me is more clear. People are imperfect and we can’t (and shouldn’t) expect anything else. Where do I go from here? I forgive, I give the benefit of the doubt, and I let go. The process won’t be easy (oddly, I’m also imperfect . . . ha.), but it must be done.
I don’t feel bad about writing these words. In fact, I feel better. This is just me processing a difficult situation. It involves real people with real feelings, and it isn’t my intention for this to be a jab at them from a safe distance. On the contrary, it makes me want to have those difficult discussions and make things right. So there you have it. Enough of my blabbering; here are the lyrics:
It Won’t Hurt
Words and Music by Adam Lockwood
Life has a way of taking
Everything away that you hold dear
I may be uncertain but
I’m certain that she’s taking me away from here
My mother and my father couldn’t
Keep things together like they vowed
The only thing that’s certain is that
Everyone you love will let you down
And if you’re leaving me
Then I’m leaving you first
So it won’t hurt
Ain’t it funny how a place
Where you’ve never been can feel like home
If home is where the heart is
I’ll follow mine wherever it may go
And if you’re leaving me
Then I’m leaving you first
So it won’t hurt
Seems like my loyalties
Are just letting me down
Just like everyone else
I’m out for myself
‘Bout the time you feel settled
Is the time when everything will change
So tie your knots loosely ‘cause
No one ever, ever stays the same
And if you’re leaving me
Then I’m leaving you first
So it won’t hurt
